I was struggling a bit in the morning today to post a YouTube video onto this blog. For security reasons WordPress.com doesn’t let you <embed> objects within your post. That’s understandable and makes sense. So, what would be the workaround to post a video on to your WordPress.com blog? There should be a work around…right?
Sure, there is. Thanks to Matt at WordPress, here is how you could get the video to your WordPress.com blog.
- Locate the URL for your YouTube video (it should be next (on the right side) to the video on the YouTube site itself).
- In your blog post type-in this in the space where you want the video to appear, ““ (without the quotes)
- Replace the URL above with the URL that you’ve just grabbed from the YouTube site.
- Publish your post.
Simple, that’s all you have to do to get the video to your WordPress.com blog. Now, in case if just pasting the thing didn’t work then,
- Change to the HTML mode so that you’ll have access to the post’s HTML.
- In the space where you want the video to appear, type in this, “<code></code>” (again, without the quotes)
- Replace the URL above with the URL that you’ve just grabbed from the YouTube site.
- Publish your post again.
That’s it. You should be able to see the embedded video player on your WordPress.com blog.

Hi Matt,
I’ve searched the word press site and try all sorts of ways to embedd or post a YouTube video on my site.
Is there any other way I can do this or a way you could talk me through it.

But anyway, I just realized that WordPress has somehow eaten a bit of my post. Here are the updated steps needed to make this happen,

hey guys:
i tried that, and it doesn’t work.
i also searched the engines and can’t find anything that works
i want to take a URL of a video from YouTube and have it play only on my site. i don’t want my visitors to go to YouTube for obvious reasons.
any ideas?

As a proof that the above steps work I have a new post up on the front page that has an embedded YouTube video.
Irrespective of what kind of platform you use to publish to your blog, if you access to your HTML go into the place where you want your video to appear and use the following syntax to embed the video,
[youtube=URL]
Replace the URL with the YouTube video URL that you must have grabbed from the site.
I’ve explained this on my comments. Make sure that you don’t introduce any quotes on the above syntax. It should work.

Hey Guys, if you are still having problems, because askar forgot the most important thing for posting it.
Here’s How you’ll add Video to your wordpress blog. Go to and download the easytube plugin for wordpress.
http://www.paulbain.co.uk/simple-youtube-plugin-for-wordpress-easytube/
Now use [youtube:yourYOUTUBEURL]
See, askar made a small mistake, He forgot he was using the plugin. WordPress doesn’t have any functionality which converts these tags into youtube video.

Thanks Varun for the detailed comment. I don’t remember of downloading any plugins for this. It used to work without any issues and that’s how I’ve posted quite a few of Youtube videos on my blog. But then it looks like it stopped working as WordPress.com evolves
But this plugin seems to resolve the problem and thanks again for sharing that with us.
